Moving to a New Neighbourhood? 7 Things to Consider
Moving to a new neighbourhood is about more than finding a house you like. You’re choosing where you’ll spend your mornings, where you’ll grab coffee, how long your commute will be and what your weekends might look like.
We’ve helped buyers move throughout New Westminster, Burnaby and the Lower Mainland and one thing we’ve learned is that the neighbourhood can matter just as much as the home.
Here are seven things we think you should consider before making the move.
Premium Housing
British Columbia, particularly Vancouver and the Lower Mainland, is home to some incredible properties. But if you’re searching online, be cautious of listings that seem too good to be true. Photos and virtual tours can be helpful, but we recommend viewing a property in person before signing a lease or making a deposit.
The Vancouver housing market is competitive, so if you’re looking for a premium home, it’s important to start your search early and work with someone who knows the local market.
The Weather
One of the best things about living in British Columbia is the scenery—and the weather is part of the experience. Vancouver is known for its mild climate and plenty of rain, particularly through the fall and winter.
If you’re moving to Vancouver or the Lower Mainland, come prepared for wet weather. A good rain jacket, waterproof shoes and an umbrella will quickly become essentials.
Walkability and Transportation
One of the great things about living in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland is how easy it can be to get around without a car. Many neighbourhoods are walkable and offer convenient cycling routes.
Public transportation is also well connected, with options like SkyTrain and SeaBus making it easier to commute throughout Metro Vancouver. If you want to experience the city like a local, walking and cycling are great ways to explore your neighbourhood.
Get to Know the Neighbourhoods
Like any major city, Vancouver has neighbourhoods with different personalities, amenities and challenges. If you’re new to British Columbia, it’s worth researching an area before choosing where to live.
The Downtown Eastside is a historic Vancouver neighbourhood with complex social and economic challenges. If you’re unfamiliar with the area, consider visiting with someone who knows the neighbourhood and take time to understand the surrounding streets and amenities.
More broadly, we recommend exploring different Vancouver and Lower Mainland neighbourhoods before deciding where you want to call home.
Building Community
Moving to a new city can take some time to feel like home. While Vancouver and British Columbia are welcoming and diverse, it can sometimes take a little effort to build a social circle and meet new people.
Joining a local community centre, sports team, club or neighbourhood group is a great way to connect with people and get to know your new community. Give it some time—you may find that getting involved locally makes settling into Vancouver much easier.
A Healthy Lifestyle
In addition, moving to a new neighbourhood…Vancouver is a great place for an active lifestyle. With parks, walking and cycling routes, fitness centres, yoga studios and hiking trails, there are plenty of ways to get outside and stay active.
If you enjoy spending time outdoors, Vancouver and the Lower Mainland offer plenty of opportunities to make an active lifestyle part of your everyday routine.
Education and Schools
If you’re moving to Vancouver or the Lower Mainland with children, schools will likely be an important part of your decision. British Columbia has a wide range of public and private schools, along with colleges and universities.
Vancouver is also home to the University of British Columbia (UBC), one of Canada’s leading universities. When choosing where to live, it’s worth considering school catchments, commute times and access to education options that fit your family.
Final Thoughts
Moving to a new neighbourhood is an exciting opportunity, whether you’re relocating for work, school or a fresh start. With a little planning and research, choosing the right Vancouver or Lower Mainland neighbourhood can make the transition much easier.
Take the time to explore your options, get to know the area and find a community that feels right for you.
